A Senate judiciary panel is supporting a rewrite of Louisiana’s constitutional protections for the right to bear arms, despite concerns it could nullify most gun restrictions in the state and could open the door to allow guns in schools, bars and churches.
The proposal sponsored by Republican Sen. Neil Riser and pushed by the National Rifle Association heads to the full Senate for debate over the opposition of the state’s district attorneys, chiefs of police and higher education leaders.
Riser described the bill as an attempt to ensure the state has strong protections for gun owners if federal courts overturn current U.S. constitutional provisions.
Opponents say the measure would go further and could leave lawmakers unable to enact gun-free zones.
