Former McNeese star charged in Vinton shooting

A McNeese State University football star from the early 1980s was involved in a weekend shooting in Vinton, authorities said.

Vinton Police Chief Ricky Fox said Stephen Starring, 51, 918 Stevenson St., shot Dillon Worthy, 20, 904 Stevenson St., in the lower back early Sunday morning.

Fox said Starring reported a home invasion, but did not tell authorities that he had shot one of the men.

Fox said police responded to a report of a home invasion on Stevenson Street at 3:38 a.m.

He said Starring said Worthy and another man, Joseph Batiste, 47, 904 Stevenson St., came to his door, forced their way in and began beating him.

Starring was able to break away, Fox said, and Worthy and Batiste began to run. Fox said Starring shot Worthy in the back, although it was unclear whether Worthy was still in the house or had exited the door when he was hit.

Worthy’s mother reported to police that her son had been shot and he was flown to a local hospital, Fox said. Starring was also taken to a local hospital, he said. Both were released and are being held in the Calcasieu Correctional Center.

Fox said Starring was charged with attempted second-degree murder because “when you disengage and guys take off running, you can’t shoot them in the back.”
