Lake Charles, LA: Vessel to be loaded with food aid cargo, sent to Africa’s western coast

The motor vessel Sheila McDevitt will load 28,000 tons of food aid cargo at the Port of Lake Charles for destinations on Africa’s western coast.

Lake Charles Stevedores and United Ocean Services made the announcement Wednesday.

The cargo, coming from across the United States, will include rice, beans, peas and cornmeal.

The vessel will take 12 days to load. It will reportedly create 125 jobs for longshoremen at the port. The vessel will also employ agents, tug boats and pilots, as well as other vendors necessary to supply and prepare the vessel for its voyage, a news release said.
