Bad tires cause Miss. Community College van to crash on I-12, 9 injured

ROBERT, LA (NBC33) — A passenger van from a Mississippi community college crashed on I-12 near Robert, La. Investigators believe poor tire condition may have caused the crash, and officials with the college say a full investigation will be launched.

The Louisiana State Police reports that the crash happened at around 2:00 p.m. We’re told the 15 passenger van was traveling home to the Jackson County Campus of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College system. It was carrying 9 students.

“This was our singing group, The Student Voices, and they were on their way back from the Southwest Community College where they performed in a musical activity,” Anna Kelley-Winders, Vice President of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, explained. “This was an official school trip, so of course our first priority when we learned about the accident was the student safety.”

Officials say the vehicle lost control near the Robert exit and crashed, then flipped. The vehicle landed on the median.
“All of the students involved in the accident have been able to contact their friends and family, because fortunately they’re doesn’t appear to be serious injuries,” Kelly-Winders said. “As soon as we got the call the President and the Dean headed to the scene of the accident and the hospital to check on the students.”
