Louisiana Sinkhole Cover-up?: Gassed Louisiana sinkhole family human rights plea exposes coverup

Today, near the latest Bayou Corne sinkhole area bubbling site, resides Alicia Heilig, her two children and mother, suffering burning eyes, nausea, constant dull headaches and other signs of being poisoned, with no emergency aid, cannot evacuate from the life-threatening area, they have told human rightsreporter Deborah Dupré.

The Heilig’s house is one of hundreds in Bayou Corne, Grand Bayou and Pierre Part above thesinking 1-mile by 3-mile Napoleonville Salt Dome where a giant sinkhole, parish bayous and water wells are releasing life threatening, explosive volatile hydrocarbons.

“At least every other day, there’s a chemical smell in the air, and if I sit on my porch at night, I can hear banging noises coming from behind my home towards the sinkhole,” Alicia Heilig, 27, told Dupré this week.

Alicia, the sinkhole area’s new community human rights defender, faces daunting challenge of standing up to local government official-supported oil and gas industry, all too familiar to such activists in the ongoing BP Gulf oil catastrophe, that still spews oil from the wrecked Macondo Prospect well. That event set into motion the most vigorous methane eruption in modern history, according to John Kessler of Texas A & M University, one that might be impacting a growing number of south Louisiana residents. The leaking oil contains 40% methane, much higher than the usual 5%.

“I live two miles away from the sinkhole, and when the wind is coming this direction you can smell it here,” Heilig commented. “Very strong. Almost makes you want to gag!”
