Mail From 1980s Returned To Sender

SLIDELL, La. –

While the U.S. Postal Service works to deliver mail even in the worst of conditions, occasionally something can slip through the cracks.

It was a blast from the past for Daniel and Edna Doell.

“I guess it got caught up in some machine and got tore up,” Daniel Doell said.

It was a bill that Daniel Doell mailed in March 1987, and it just arrived — return to sender — sent back to the Terrytown home the Doells still own and lived in 25 years ago.

“I was surprised. What is this? 1987? And I looked at it, and it was my husband’s handwriting,” Edna Doell said.

Remarkably, all these years later, Daniel Doell remembered mailing the check, which was a payment for parking and fuel for a plane he used to own.

“Your airplane is kind of like your mistress. It costs a lot, and it’s some fun,” Daniel Doell said.

Of course, it wasn’t much fun in 1987 to find out the bill wasn’t paid and having to mail another check.

But for the Doells, all is well that ends well. A mystery has been solved.
