Lightning suspected in fishermen deaths

PONCHATOULA — Two men reported missing on a fishing trip in Tangipahoa Parish were found dead Thursday, apparently killed by a lightning strike, authorities said.

Luther Clyde Baham Sr., 54, and his son, Luther Clyde Baham Jr., 33, were believed to have died instantaneously when hit by lightning, said Dawn Panepinto, a spokeswoman for Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards.

Both were reported missing early Thursday by family members after the father and son failed to return from a fishing trip on the Natalbany River, Panepinto said.

The pair last made contact with relatives around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday when they said worsening weather had caused them to seek shelter near an abandoned camp, Panepinto said.

The bodies were found under a small tin structure where the men apparently took cover, Panepinto said.

Severe lightning damage to surrounding trees caused authorities to suspect a hit by a lightning bolt as the cause of the men’s deaths, she said.
