6/21/13 – TURTLE CREEK, PA — Police came barging into a woman’s home because they wanted to arrest the owner for the length of her lawn. A tenant, Robyn Ruckman, recorded the encounter. As she answered the door, police treated her rudely and started making demands. She told them her name but that wasn’t good enough. They wanted her to produce ID.

After asking them to stay outside, police and health inspectors barged into her home.

“You know, I don’t even see a nametag,” Ruckman told the officer.

“I don’t give a sh*t what you see. Go get your ID. You see that?! It says POLICE.”

Police were performing a 12-hour roundup of the town’s offenders, including the horrendous crimes of having uncut grass. The Lawn Nazis took care of business that day, and the streets were safe once again. Robyn Ruckman got off easy that day, as she was not the landlord. It was the owner of the long grass that was to be put behind bars.

I have had police come to my door looking for people who either previously lived at my address, gave a false address, or police just plain came to the wrong address.

In each case they asked me my name, they had paper work in their hands with a photo of exactly who they were looking for, or at least a description.  Not once did they ask to see my ID after stating my name, because I clearly was not the person they were seeking.

They did always act as if I must be hiding that person inside by giving me the 20 questions routine to see if they could rattle me in some fashion.

It has always been Saturday mornings when I had the opportunity to sleep in  late.  Instead,  I am rattled awake  early to deal with someone banging on my door.  You know the cop knock.  Usually 3 really hard bangs on your door that probably wakes up the whole neighborhood.

From the start this makes me a grumpy panda.

I am usually wearing nothing but my undies.  I look through the blinds to see who is banging and  it’s police.   I tell them give me a second to put some pants on.  They start demanding that I  come back to the door, and get very anxious and antsy.  My knee jerk reaction is to raise my voice and restate  “LET ME PUT SOME PANTS ON!”  Seems I can never find my house coat for such occasions.

I am not opening up the door with nothing on but my underwear , end of story.  I can just see them deciding to give me a ticket for indecent exposure.

I have two cats and always have to try to keep one particular cat from darting out the open door.  I talk to the police with the door slightly ajar.  I imagine that this action looks suspicious to them in retrospect, but they never ask why I am not opening the door wide open.

I am still groggy from having been disturbed from a sound sleep so it never crosses my mind at the time that it might look suspicious to them.  Also, it doesn’t take much to seem rattled by 20 questions when you’re half awake.  I am in no mood for 20 questions, and clearly not the person they are trying to find.  I just want to go back to bed.

None the less, they never barged into my residence, and they always had name tags on their uniforms.

I am sure that they were looking for people with much more serious offenses than poor lawn maintenance.
