PEARL RIVER, La. – A 19-year-old teenager was killed and another hospitalized after a homemade explosive device went off in the Pearl River area.
Thomas J. Rinkus Jr. died of injuries sustained in the blast, St. Tammany Parish coroner Dr. Peter Galvan said Monday afternoon.

Technicians with the Sheriff’s office Hazardous Device Unit (bomb squad) conducted a thorough search of the area and examined the device itself to ensure there was no remaining threat. The exact composition of the explosive materials has not yet been determined.
The incident is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
The condition of the 17-Year-Old that was injured is unknown at this time. Police pointed out that the device was very basic, and not designed to be taken somewhere else for malicious purposes.
