‘Extinct’ rhino caught on camera: Sumatran rhino back from the dead in Indonesian rainforest

A Sumatran rhino, thought to be extinct in eastern Borneo, has been caught on camera in the Indonesian rainforest. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said the footage was captured in June and August.

“I think the findings in Kalimantan and probably in other places in Sumatra has given us hope,” said Dr. Sunarto, a species specialist at WWF Indonesia.

“So even though we are frustrated at the decreasing population and the critical condition the Sumatran rhinos are in, we now at least have something to hold onto.”

In the wild, the Sumatran rhino once roamed across southeast Asia but today, fewer than 300 are believed to survive, WWF has said. While a number of these animals are kept in zoos, they rarely breed in captivity. Report by Katie Lamborn.
