St. Landry Parish: Menard, Cravins charged with ethics violations

The state ethics board has filed separate ethics violation charges against former St. Landry Parish President Don Menard and Opelousas Mayor Don Cravins Sr. in connection with campaign contributions associated with their campaigns for state offices in 2011.

In Cravins’ case, the board brought suit this week in the 27th Judicial District Court here. That suit argues Cravins received what the board feels were improper campaign contributions during his unsuccessful 2011 run for state senator.

He is charged with violating RS 18:1505.2H, which “prohibits a district level office candidate from receiving contributions in excess of $2,500.”

According to the suit, Cravins received a contribution of $5,000 from the TBI Political Action Committee.

The suit also alleged Cravins contributed $2,500 to his son, Dustin Cravins, which is a violation of the law that forbids candidates from making any payments or expenditures to an immediate family member.
