The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office has identified the man found dead inside a burning car Tuesday night as Christopher Campbell, who worked at an automobile body shop and had a passion for working on cars and racing them. Campbell, 28, of Violet, was found inside a burning Ford Mustang on the Louisiana 46 Extension, near the junction of the Florissant/Delacroix highways, authorities said.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday, but the Sheriff’s Office has not released a cause of death. Nonetheless, the death is being handled as a homicide.

“We’re absolutely investigating this as a homicide,” Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann said.

A passerby alerted the Sheriff’s Office to the burning vehicle on Tuesday about 11 p.m. A deputy in the area reported to the scene. Firefighters put out the blaze and discovered the badly burned body of a man inside the 2004 Mustang.
