Nearly 200 caskets floated from resting places in Plaquemines Parish
PLAQUEMINES PARISH, La. —
Nearly 200 caskets of bodies from three different cemeteries in Plaquemines Parish floated away from their final resting places after Hurricane Isaac hit the state in 2012, officials said.
Netiokee Hill said when she buried her mother in 2007, she never thought she’d be searching for her body five years later.
“When I came to where my mother and my family is, it was gone. It was just the ground,” Hill said.
Hill’s mother, grandmother and great-grandfather were buried in the Promised Land Cemetery along Highway 39, but their tombs, along with dozens others, were disturbed by Hurricane Isaac.
“A lot of restless nights I had, not knowing where my mother is, where my grandparents are,” Hill said.
Officials with the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office took on the task of collecting, identifying and returning the remains to the cemeteries.
“We had 143 cases, close to 200 bodies were recovered and we identified 134 bodies,” said Commander Eric Becnel with the PPSO. “Therefore, we have 60 bodies or remains that have yet to be identified.”
