Montegut, La. – Kim Griffin isn’t ready to cut off the wristband from Ochsner Medical Center. It would feel too final.
“It’s like my connection to her, the last connection I have to her,” she says.
Griffin’s daughter, 15-year-old Berthe Griffin, died Tuesday. The teen had been on life support for more than a week after the car she was in landed upside down in Bayou Terrebonne.
“Her heart stopped beating,” says Griffin. “She stopped taking breaths over the machine first. Then she gave up, she couldn’t do it.”
Louisiana State Police say Berthe’s uncle, 18-year-old Justin Naquin, was speeding and possibly intoxicated when he lost control at a curve in Montegut.
16-year-old Sheila Naquin made it out of the car. The family says it took rescuers more than 20 minutes to get Berthe out of the backseat.
Justin’s body was found when a tow truck pulled the car out of the water.
