John Sens, Gerard J. Hoffman charged with conspiracy to commit bribery
Two Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office officials have been charged with taking bribes.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said 52-year-old John P. Sens and 59-year-old Gerard J. Hoffman were charged with conspiracy to commit bribery. Prosecutors on Tuesday released two bills of information stating that Sens and Hoffman received things of value from two unidentified businessmen in return for steering Sheriff’s Office work to them.
Part of the conspiracy allegedly involved submitting phony bids in the names of local companies to give the appearance of a competitive bid process.
Prosecutors said Sens is alleged to have received cash, a custom-built swimming pool and works of art, like Blue Dog paintings, from the businessmen. Hoffman allegedly received free electrical work and a trailer. The Sheriff’s Office has not commented.
Two businessmen were also listed, but were not names in the bill of information.
