They finished just seconds apart and just a little over two minutes before the first bomb went off.

But Opelousas residents Jennifer Castille and Kathryn Jarrell were unharmed in the explosion that rocked the Boston Marathon today, according to husband Ric Castille.

“She called me but then we got cut off almost immediately,” Ric Castille said. “She told me everything’s OK, and that the group that came from Opelousas, they’re all OK.”

Ric Castille said that about 12 women from Opelousas went to Boston for the iconic marathon, but only Castille and Jarrell ran in the race.

Both are veteran marathoners.

Local runners escape harm in Boston Marathon blast

BOSTON —Dozens of Louisiana and Mississippi runners are among those who participated in the Boston Marathon, and while there were no immediate reports of any injuries to local participants, family and friends are scrambling to establish contact with each of them.

One local runner who escaped harm is Jessica Kempainen, who is co-owner of Hour Blast Fitness in New Orleans. Kempainen had already completed the course when the first explosion happened.

“It’s absolute chaos, and everyone around here seems to be in complete shock,” she told WDSU in a phone interview Monday afternoon. “I can’t explain how lucky I feel. Thankfully, I ran a fast race and didn’t have to experience this firsthand.”

Kempainen was accompanied to Boston by her mother and boyfriend. They were already on their way back to the hotel when the blasts erupted.
