ALEXANDRIA, La. – The late Israel “Bo” Curtis was an active citizen in central Louisiana and a sort of mentor to many local politicians. News Channel 5’s Crystal Whitman takes a look back at the life and legacy of Mr. Curtis.
He was a true public servant who believed in fairness, justice and opportunity for all.
“He was kind. He was gentle. He was a voice of the people,” says Barbara Curtis, his wife for 56 years.
Bo Curtis was a coach and educator who served on the school board before being elected to serve District 29 in 1991.
He was the first African-American state legislator from Alexandria. He died in 2012 at the age of 79.
“The legacy that one wants to leave is to always leave something a little better than it was when you came. And so, his legacy was ‘to do what I can,’ and he had a theme ‘if I can help somebody as I pass along, my living would not have been in vain,'” says Curtis.
