The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office on Friday arrested one of its deputies after DNA evidence supported a woman’s allegation that he sexually assaulted her while she was in custody last year. Elijah D. Gary, 29, of Port Sulphur, whose credibility problems led St. Charles officials to drop charges against 60 defendants nabbed in a sweeping narcotics investigation two years ago, was booked with sexual battery and malfeasance of office for sexual misconduct.
He is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau began the investigation Nov. 20, after a 29-year-old woman told detectives he sexually assaulted her while he was processing her into jail after booking her. The Sheriff’s Office did not say why Gary arrested her.
After her complaint, evidence was collected, including DNA samples that were sent to the State Police crime lab. DNA evidence, which the Sheriff’s Office did not describe, supported the woman’s story and led to the arrest.
