A bill protecting the privacy of concealed weapon permit holders could clear its final legislative hurdle today.

Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Bossier City) sponsored the bill as a reaction the New York Journal-News‘ publication of the identities and addresses of that state’s concealed-carry weapons permit holders in two counties.

The panel spent much longer debating HB8 by Rep. Jeff Thompson, R-Bossier City.

HB8 imposes a jail term and $10,000 fine on any publication or blog that publicizes the names of holders of Louisiana permits allowing the carrying of concealed handguns.

Thompson said the names are exempt from public record requests, but there’s currently no penalty for publishing the names, should someone release them.
