Carencro, LA: Flood relief denied again

When the Millers checked the mail at their former Carencro home this week, they found the letter they’d been dreading for weeks: the one that told them they would not receive compensation for flood damages to their home.

“We were kind of — because we’ve been through so much — we kind of knew it would work out this way,” Vicki Miller said. “But we were hoping that God would change their hearts.”

As The Daily World reported Sunday, the Millers have fought with their homeowner’s and flood insurance companies for the past year to receive payment for damages to their Bacon Lane home following the March 12, 2012 Carencro flood. They tried to repair some of the damages themselves, expecting to be reimbursed for expenses, but eventually had to move out of their home due to toxic mold.

Now, the home is unlivable, and their rejected appeal to FEMA has left them worried they will have to file for bankruptcy at a time of their lives when they should be preparing for retirement.

“I was stunned because all they did was take the engineer’s inaccurate statement, and that’s the reason they denied it,” Vicki Miller said.
