AMITE, LA (WAFB) –
An Amite City councilman set to take the oath of office will have to answer to a judge after going through a no-refusal DWI checkpoint.
Arthur Leonard, 48, will be sworn in for his first-term as a councilman next Tuesday. In the meantime, he’s got some legal troubles.
State troopers said Leonard went through a DWI checkpoint on Highway 51 on December 28th. After pulling the future councilman over, troopers gave Leonard a urine test and a breathalyzer. Even though officials said Leonard blew a .000, troopers suspected drug impairment, which is why they arrested and charged him with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and driving with an expired license plate.

I find the idea of a no-refusal DWI checkpoint disconcerting. Of course I don’t want people to be driving under the influence, but it is again another system that punishes all the people doing the right thing because of the few that do the wrong thing. Impeding traffic to catch a few amongst the many. You are guilty until proven innocent under this system. No probable cause, just make everybody piss in a cup and blow through a tube.
My Grandfather was livid when they passed seatbelt laws. Not because he was against safety, but he was against the idea of a Nanny State telling you what you could and couldn’t do in your own vehicle. He said at the time something to the affect, if they can force that on the people what else would they be able to do? I guess in some ways it’s a good thing that he has passed away. I wonder what he would think of the state of our country at this point?
How long will it be before they allow Police to stop you as you walk the street without probable cause at a sidewalk checkpoint – not even in a vehicle – and give you a no-refusal strip-search frisk for drugs and firearms under the guise of cutting down on gang activities to protect the children? Show us your papers, paraphernalia, and firearms!
