Dirty Laundry: Musings of a Former News Man
My first job was working in a china warehouse.
Not the China – the country, no I worked in fine china: expensive plates, cups, silverware etc. My first employer was the House of 1776 in Garland, Texas. My dad was a manager there and got me a summer job that became an after school job in the fall of 1985.
I wouldn’t trade anything for my first work experience, the work was simple, unloading trucks, stocking shelves, packing orders for shipment. I’d go home smelling like sweat and covered in dust, it was fantastic, I felt like a real man, a working man, teenage salt of the earth if you will.
My first paycheck was 134.27, I’ll never forget holding it in my hands the first time, the thrill of going to the bank and cashing it was one of the finest memories of my life. Still have the check-stub…
