Moving a museum: A ‘mammoth undertaking’ | #Monroe #Louisiana

Transporting 100,000 jars of fish specimens, a 240-gallon saltwater fish tank, countless fossils and minerals, a cast of a dinosaur skull and dozens of animal head mounts is no easy task, according to faculty at the University of Louisiana at Monroe who are doing just that.

The majority of the display items from ULM’s Museum of Natural History are being relocated from the third floor of Sandel Hall, which is soon to undergo renovations, to the first floor of Hanna Hall. Meanwhile, the research collections have been moved to the first floor of Brown Stadium, where they are being housed in a temperature-controlled environment and will continue to be available to research scientists.

“It’s been a mammoth undertaking,” said Gary Stringer, professor emeritus of Geology at ULM, as he explained that many of the larger items from the museum, such as the mammoth skull, had to be disassembled before they could be moved to their new home.
