The Opelousas City Marshal’s Office has added pepper spray to its arsenal.
Marshal Paul Mouton said donations from area businesses have allowed him to equip his deputies with four new JPX Jet Protector pepper guns.
Mouton said he chose these weapons over Tasers, which is used by many area law enforcement agencies, for safety reasons.
Tasers fires two fine wires into the aggressor that allows the officer to then shock them into submission. The pepper guns fire a blast of oleoresin capsicum, more commonly known as pepper spray.
“I’ve heard of too many deaths from Tasers. This works fine and still gives us respect,” Mouton said.
