Bob Dole Lashes Republican Party: They Should Put A Sign On The Door That Says ‘Closed For Repairs’

5/26/13 – Former Senator Bob Dole appeared on Fox News Sunday and had scathing words for the leaders of the party that once nominated him for president. “I think they ought to put a sign on the National Committee door that says ‘closed for repairs,’ until New Years’ Day next year,” Dole told Chris Wallace, “and spend that time going over ideas and positive agendas.”

Wallace compared the two cloture motions during Dole’s first two years as senator to the 115 filed in the last two years by senate Republicans. Dole said the filibuster was being abused. “There are some cases when you could probably justify it,” Dole said, “but not many.”

“Could people like Bob Dole, even Ronald Reagan, could you make it in today’s Republican party?” Wallace asked.

“I doubt it,” Dole said. “Reagan couldn’t have made it. Certainly Nixon couldn’t have made it, because he had ideas.”

“Too moderate?” Wallace said. “Too willing to compromise?”

“I just consider myself a Republican,” Dole said. “None of this hyphenated stuff. I was a mainstream conservative Republican.”
