JPSO: Deputy arrested for stealing items from evidence room

JEFFERSON, La. — A Jefferson Parish deputy is behind bars after allegedly stealing items from the sheriff’s office.

George Hernandez, 54, had been a member of the sheriff’s office since March 1997. He was assigned to the property and evidence section.

JPSO spokesman Col. John Fortunato said an investigation was launched after receiving a tip on Hernandez’s involvement in a “systematic theft” of JPSO property.
