BUFFALO, NY: Hidden artwork at the Knox “revealed”

The hidden artwork is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, but you can’t see it unless conditions are just right. Artist Andy Goldsworthy came from Scotland to create the work.

Curator Doug Dreishpoon confirms a snake runs the length of the new trail.

“It’s hidden to the extent that you won’t see it unless the [weather] conditions are correct, and then you will see it revealing itself.”

Empire State Development partially paid for the installation. The development group gave Albright Knox $367,000. A fourth of that money ($91,750) was used for the Goldsworthy project, according to Jennifer Bayles, development director at the gallery. She declined to reveal the total price for the project citing standard museum policy.

Nick Giambra who regularly uses the path questions the concept.

“I think it was a waste of money. I don’t understand the concept behind it,” he said.

Dreishpoon definitely disagrees. He believes the snake will be a big draw for the Albright Knox.

“It has the subtle quality that you either see it, or [you] don’t see it. [Visitors] will get to know it’s there, and if they go at a certain time, they’ll get to see the result.”

The artist would not provide a picture of what it looks like.  Heh.  Kinda cool if it works like planned – once the trail becomes worn and parts of it become visible.  I can only question and speculate what it means “conditions are right” but I think this is nothing fancier than two inches of gravel wear down in spots over time for conditions to be right.  Maybe there is some fancy glow-in-dark radiation gimmickry here.  😉  Color changing rock of some sort – alien technology?  Who knows?  The artist does and he’s not telling.

Kinda pricey gimmick piece they have there.

I would though, enjoy seeing it come to life – so to speak – if I were a resident in that area.
