BATON ROUGE — Louisiana should do a better job of training its new teachers, a national study released today says.
The National Council on Teacher Quality gives Louisiana a C in new teacher preparation, citing basic weaknesses at the college level.
But Jeanne Burns, associate commissioner of higher education for teacher education initiatives, said the study is flawed because Louisiana has addressed the concerns cited in the report.
“Louisiana is kind of in the middle of the road,” said Sandi Jacobs, state policy director for the council. “But it’s definitely a lot farther down the road than some states.”
The study was compiled from information gathered from education agencies across the country. Data gathered were compiled into annual reports that grade states according to how they prepare teachers.
