JP deputy fired after allegedly selling synthetic marijuana

JEFFERSON, La. — The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office launched an internal investigation after Eyewitness News asked a spokesman last July about evidence that one deputy, Scott Sigur, had sold synthetic marijuana online after it was outlawed in Louisiana.

Now months of investigation have led Sheriff Newell Normand to take action against Sigur.

“He is terminated, effective today,” he said. “And the results of our investigation will be turned over to the district attorney’s office.”

The sheriff said he’s disgusted and disappointed.

“We’ve been able to determine that there are in fact three sales that occurred in Louisiana after the date that the substance JWH-018 was actually outlawed in Louisiana,” Normand said.

He was fired and he may face criminal charges later but  if it was you or I we would already have been arrested.

Normand said he was “no better than any other thug that’s selling the banned substance.”

So why hasn’t he been arrested?

Why were customers and clerks at  Dymka Shop arrested  when they couldn’t possibly know for sure what was legal and what wasn’t legal?  You go into a shop and they have something to sell you assume it must be legal.  The laws around this synthetic stuff is tricky, the formulas change and the law keeps getting  updated to cover the new chemical compounds.  Some of the wording of the law are comical to the point that Basil or Cat-Nip if sold as an incense could get you arrested based solely on appearance.

Funny how quickly they can pass laws, but try to get rid of a law takes a monumental effort.  That’s why we have stuff like this:

It’s illegal to chase a fish in a city park; A guide to silly LA laws

Sigur knew for a fact what he was doing was illegal and used the mail system to be more covert.  One major difference too,  places like Dymka Shop you have to be an adult to enter and buy those products they offered.  Sigur was just mailing it out to whoever with no consideration of age.

I have a funny feeling that the heavy handedness in dealing with synthetics is going to come back and bite some folks in this state.

When do we just let adults be responsible for their own actions instead of trying to legislate morality and all sorts of other things that really shouldn’t be a matter of law?

We tolerate drunks as long as they aren’t driving or harming anyone.  We should tolerate drug users in the same manner.

That’s how I feel anyway…but what do I know?  I’m just an average guy with a blog who lives in a dry city.

  1. He was planting evidence and giving false statements to arrest people. He targeted the homeless. Nothing was ever done with the complaints. He was cleared by internal affairs. But there are those of us who know that his arrests were not good to begin with.
