[Not Present] – Westboro Baptist Church announces plans to protest Louisiana Marine’s funeral

SLIDELL, La. —
A small church notorious for disrupting solemn events has stated it will do just that in St. Tammany Parish this weekend.

The Westboro Baptist Church travels the country picketing at funerals for, among others, fallen members of the military.

The Kansas-based church has posted on its website that it intends to demonstrate at services on Saturday for Sgt. Michael Guillory.

The church, led by pastor Fred Phelps, said God is punishing America for its tolerance of homosexuality through events such as the deaths of soldiers.

According to the church’s website, “God hates America and is killing our troops in his wrath.” The site concluded with “Thank God for IEDs,” referring to the improvised explosive devices that have taken many American lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.
