But Cotton Brothers is still closed.  Small comfort don’t you think?

And as far as the CEO’s and their fat pay checks and raises, some people seem to forget about the Union Big Wigs and their big pay checks funded by those workers.  Hostess pays the employees for a job,  the union take their dues.

Not everything you see on this site is a regurgitated talking point from one side or the other.  It is MY side.  And sometimes – whether you like it or not – the regurgitated talking  points are correct.

So  yes,  I know exactly how the unions operate.  I have worked  at several union jobs.  I am no fan of unions – not because of the talking heads rhetoric but from my own personal experience with working with them.

After 61 years Cotton Brothers Bakery is closing down.

Cotton Brothers Bakery started in 1923 and  has made Holsum Bread in Alexandria since 1951.

According to the Town Squawk  Cotton Brothers Bakery told it’s 170 + employees this morning to clean out their lockers.

They are no longer locally owned, and is part of Interstate Brands that make Hostess Twinkies.

According to Hostess:

The Board of Directors  authorized the wind down of Hostess Brands to preserve and maximize the value of the estate after one of the Company’s largest unions, the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM), initiated a nationwide strike that crippled the Company’s ability to produce and deliver products at multiple facilities.

The wind down means the closure of 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers, approximately 5,500 delivery routes and 570 bakery outlet stores throughout the United States.

Cotton Brothers began in Alexandria in 1923 in a small bakery on Third Street. Later expansion occurred when their bakery was relocated to Bolton Avenue. In 1952, yet another move occurred to their ultra modern facility on MacArthur Drive.
