Shreveport, LA: SPD cruiser hits juveniles biking on North Market

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) –

Shreveport Police say an officer in a cruiser struck two teens riding a bicycle Tuesday evening on North Market, causing serious injuries to one of them.

Police Cpl. Marcus Hines says it happened just before 6 p.m., as Shreveport Police Lt. Joseph Bartlett was driving his department issued 2010 Ford Crown Victoria southbound on North Market Street approaching Barton Drive. Lt. Bartlett saw the male cyclist operating a bicycle with another passenger on the handlebars. According to police, the cyclist and passenger were traveling on the roadway, apparently attempting to cross North Market Street when the crash occurred. Lt. Bartlett swerved in an attempt to avoid the bicycle, but was unable to do so. That’s when police say the cyclist and passenger collided with the driver’s side of the police unit.

The 16-year-old that was riding on the handlebars was taken to LSU Medical Center in critical condition. He has since been identified as Jermone Houston. Updates on his condition are not available.
