Food Services removing deep fryers from Calcasieu Parish school cafeterias

Plenty of changes are taking place in the school cafeterias and now Food Services with the Calcasieu Parish School Board is disconnecting and removing the deep fryers from the cafeterias in all of the schools across Calcasieu Parish.

It’s all about making the school lunches healthier by cutting out the fried foods which are high in fats and looking toward alternatives.

Also, there are specific guidelines Food Services has to follow and by not using the deep fryers, those guidelines can be met, according to Food Services Director Patricia Hosemann. These guidelines were set at the state and federal levels.

“The fat content is very hard to meet with just baking much less frying anything,” Hosemann said. Each meal served at lunch every day must only contain 10 grams of fat.
