Baton Rouge, LA: Dealership honors deposits taken by wanted employee

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) –

Courtney Green purchased his first car recently but the process was anything but easy.

“I’m a college student and I’m independent and I work two jobs, man. This discouraged me a lot.”

Green was one of four customers at Capitol Auto Sales who say they paid cash deposits to an employee. That employee, Mike Chavis, is under investigation by Baton Rouge Police for multiple thefts of deposits at the dealership. After initial complaints by a few of the customers, the owner Daniel Bacon says he’s taking responsibility for the crimes on his property.

“This is definitely a wake up call and we’ll take further action, whenever we hire someone else we’ll definitely look into it,” said Bacon.

All told, Bacon says refunding and honoring deposits from these thefts has amounted to more than $4,000, but adds that he, like his affected customers, is a victim.

“It hurts a lot being the fact that we put him in a rental property. We gave him a car and trusted him at our business doing this, and it hurts – but in the long run, justice will serve him,” added Bacon.
