Baton Rouge, LA: ATC introduces new fake pot sniffing dog

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) –

The Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control (ATC) has a new weapon in its fight against the illegal selling and misuse of synthetic marijuana.

Commissioner Troy Hebert announced it now has a police dog trained to detect odors associated with the drug.

The canine is a 2-year-old male German shepherd from Holland.

Officials have not yet named it and invite school age children to help with that.

Send suggestions to: emily.cassidy@la.gov.

Officials advised the best names only have one or two syllables, like Duke or Hunter.

The deadline to submit a name is Friday, Oct. 26.

Hebert added synthetic marijuana has been linked to suicide, death and criminal behavior.

[The media and law enforcement keep making this claim about suicide and death etc.  Can anyone find any story whatsoever where definitive proof has been provided that these assertions are true?

Who, what, when,  where?

They have said the same thing about bath-salts –  but I have yet to see anything proving this beyond a shadow of a doubt.  Many times they claim a person was under the influence of a synthetic drug only to have to retract it later as blood test reveal it was something else entirely – usually drugs we already associate with such claims like meth or PCP.  I have heard far more anectodale evidence that it could be true with bath-salts,  but I have not heard much of anything anecdotally about synthetic  marijuana.

Anyway, drugs are bad mmk…but I also want to know the facts about these drugs, not conjecture, speculation, rumor, and conspiracy.

A lot of things I was taught about alcohol, and marijuana as a kid turned to not be true.  It is one thing to discourage drug use, it’s another thing to overstate, or flat out lie to people to instill fear in people over these drugs.

We focus far to much on criminalizing drug use and not enough time helping people break  an addiction.  Throwing people in prison and tearing families apart is not helping families deal with a problem like drug addiction.  Often they have even easier access to drugs in prison.  It’s a viscous cycle that needs to end.]
