Camp Minden Bunker Explosion Cited as Cause for Loud Bang in Bossier-Webster Parishes

MINDEN, LA. — Many northwest Louisiana residents were shaken by a massive bunker explosion late Monday — but while nerves were rattled and even some windows broken, no injuries were reported.
“A large flash was observed,” the Shreveport, La., National Weather Service reported, according to Accuweather. “[C]itizens were shaken out of bed and windows were shattered during the late night hours Oct. 15.”

The N.O.A.A. radar stationed at the Shreveport regional airport caught what appears to be the plume of debris from the Camp Minden explosion. Many area residents also report they saw a fireball racing through the night sky around 11:00 pm Monday night. Stay tuned to KTBS 3 News for more updates on this story through out the day.

A bunker exploded late last night at Camp Minden, rocking homes across Bossier and Webster parishes. Several early reports that a meteorite had struck the earth nearby are incorrect. No injuries have been reported. A press conference is being held this morning to discuss the incident.

Northwest Louisiana authorities are investigating the source of whatever shook people’s residences and businesses about 11:40 p.m. Monday.

The Webster sheriff’s office now is entertaining the possibility that it may have been a meteorite, possibly in the Dixie Inn area. There have been a large number of reports stating that they saw something come down instead of something blow up, a spokesman said.

And a woman reported hearing what sounded like debris hit a shop on Bellevue Road in the Dixie Inn area.

If it was a meteorite, that would fall to NASA and the Air Force to investigate. A spokeswoman for Barksdale Air Force Base public affairs said that the installation is investigating and that whatever the source, it didn’t originate at the base.
