LAPLACE, La. – One of the suspects accused of taking part in the Augustshootings of four St. John Parish sheriff’s deputies is expected to be in court Wednesday for a pre-trial hearing.

The investigation is still underway as prosecutors attempt to get their case together in the fatal shooting of two deputies and the wounding of two others.

Kyle David Joekel is charged with two counts of first degree murder in the deaths of Deputy Brandon Nielsen and Deputy Jeremy Triche that occurred on August 16.

Joekel is set to appear before a judge in order to receive a court appointed attorney.

An attorney for one of Joekel’s co-defendants said it could be problematic finding lawyers properly qualified for death penalty cases, especially based on the pay rates the state offers.

Louisiana is currently prosecuting 120 death penalty cases.
