NOLA residents decry ‘offensive’ ad campaign

Signs part of anti-cancer awareness program

Residents across the Crescent City are up in arms over a rash of new signs that are rubbing many people the wrong way.

Charles Wendell said a sign was posted near his flag shop, Brad & Dellwen Flags, on Friday at an RTA bus stop that read, “Cat Lovers Deserve To Die.”

“This is absolutely bizarre. I don’t like it. We have cats, I don’t understand what it’s all about,” Wendell said. “People have been stopping by asking about it, offended by it.”

The advocacy group Lung Cancer Alliance recently launched an anti-smoking campaign in several cities that revolves around posters and is also creating a buzz.

Similar ads are found on the website noonedeservestodie.org. The website states that every year, 160,000 lives are lost to the deadly disease.

“Nobody, who looks at that sign is going to grab that kind of message,” Wendell said.
