Metairie, LA: Man charged with stealing rebar from I-10 twin spans demolition

Jason Hedges

A Metairie man has been arrested in connection with the theft of approximately $750,000 worth of scrap material from the old Interstate 10 twin spans over Lake Pontchartrain, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said. Jason Hedges, 34, was booked June 19 with one count of theft over $1,500 and released the same day on $50,000 bond.

Hedges, of 4409 Hearst St., was working for NASDI LLC, a demolition contractor that is removing the old twin spans between Slidell and eastern New Orleans. Part of the contract involved NASDI recycling or selling for scrap some of the materials after the bridges were demolished.

Company officials became concerned when they noticed a suspicious lack of proper record-keeping with the job, Sheriff Jack Strain said in a news release.
