Woman pleads guilty to stealing nearly $2 million

The former recording secretary for the Florida Parishes Juvenile Justice Commission pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of felony theft in 21st Judicial District Court.

Brenda Bickford was charged with stealing nearly $2 million from the commission over a 10-year period. Bickford spent the money on day-to-day expenses, including her mother’s stay at a nursing home, daycare and home improvements as well as injecting funds into her son’s business, said Assistant Attorney General David Caldwell, who prosecuted the case.

Caldwell said he would dismiss the single count of forgery against Bickford.

Ad hoc Judge Jerome Winsburg deferred sentencing to Sept. 7 and ordered a pre-sentencing investigation.

The woman accused of stealing more than $2 million from a juvenile justice commission where she worked as a secretary is expected in court Monday.

The Office of the Louisiana Attorney General said it believes Brenda Bickford may have embezzled an additional $800,000 from the Florida Parishes Juvenile Justice Commission.

Bickford is charged with felony theft and forgery.
