Feminist group “NOW” starts local chapter in Shreveport-Bossier

An organization that can sometimes be controversial is growing a branch here in Shreveport-Bossier. It’s the National Organization for Women or NOW.

“This is not a hate group,” branch creator Paula Gonyea said. “This is not a man hating group. We just want equality. That’s all we’re asking for.”

NOW has more than half a million members and hundreds of chapters in all 50 states. The Shreveport-Bossier chapter is the second for Louisiana. The first was started in New Orleans. Gonyea says she hopes to fight for several issues including equal rights for women, reproductive rights, ending racism and more.

“Ending bigotry against lesbians and gays and social justice,” she said. “We need to do that in Shreveport-Bossier.”
