It’s safe to say that Greg Aymond was a polarizing figure.
The Alexandria native, who graduated from Poland High School before studying at Louisiana College and earning a law degree from LSU, was a successful attorney for several local law firms before opening his own practice.
He also ran a controversial blog that focused on politics in Central Louisiana, where he earned a reputation for being a dogged custodian of public records. Aymond didn’t mince words on his blog — which still can be viewed at http://centrallapolitics.blogspot.com— and was known to call out a number of public officials with whom he disagreed.
This past weekend, Aymond succumbed to a series of health issues, including several strokes, and died early Saturday morning at the age of 55.
Aymond found controversy early in his life when he briefly joined the Ku Klux Klan, and though he later claimed to have denounced the group shortly after joining, Aymond twice was shown in The Town Talk in 1979 dressed in KKK attire. His critics continually claimed that Aymond was a racist and used his ties to the group as evidence.
Tommy Davenport, an Alexandria attorney who befriended Aymond in recent years and served as an honorary pallbearer at Aymond’s funeral on Tuesday, praised Aymond for writing “openly and honestly” on his blog and choosing not “to be cloaked in anonymity” like many other bloggers.
