Sheriff: Inmate attempts to smuggle 5 phones ‘in his private parts’

An Orleans Parish Prison inmate, awaiting trial on attempted murder and other charges, is in even more trouble, now.  Sheriff’s officials say the inmate tried to smuggle contraband into the jail.

Sheriff Marlin Gusman says it appears inmate Louis Monroe had it all planned out.
“He self-inflicted a wound,” by slamming his hand in a cell door, Gusman said.  The wound was bad enough deputies had to take Monroe to University Hospital.  That’s where Sheriff Gusman says Monroe’s conspirators left the contraband for him.
“Monroe attempted to re-enter the jail with five cell phones, two cell phone chargers and four individually packaged prescription pills,” Gusman said.
The sheriff said it was a strip-search that revealed the items, “in very loose terms, in his private parts.”
Gusman says every day, guards at the prison have to deal with people trying to sneak items past them behind prison walls, but this was one of the more extreme instances.
The sheriff said Monroe was trying to get the phones and drugs on behalf of other inmates, and an investigation is underway to identify them as well as the person or persons on the outside who conspired to leave the contraband for Monroe to gather at University Hospital.
