BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) –
A worker on the USS Kidd received severe burns and reportedly lost part of his hand during an accident on board the ship Tuesday.
The injured worker, shift supervisor Tim Nesmith, was taken off the ship by stretcher. His face was covered in dark soot and showed obvious signs of burns. Nesmith has worked on the ship for about 15 years.
The accident happened during three-cannon salute that was part of a ceremony to honor military veterans who have died in the past year.
“All three shots went off but the third is what got him and we don’t know why,” USS Kidd Director Maury Drummond said shortly after the accident. Drummond later said the cannon appeared to have experienced a blowback.
“He was in a great deal of pain,” witness Leonard Butler said. “He was in tears and, I think, he didn’t really know what was going on,” he said. “It is pretty bad.”
