Home invasion suspect impersonating Catholic Charities worker

New Orleans, La. — Police say someone impersonating a charity worker is responsible for a home invasion in the 7th Ward Saturday morning.

“Today at about 10am, in the 1200 block of Kerlerec Street, an 84-year-old man opened his door to a man who claimed to be a Catholic Charities representative,” reads a news release from NOPD.  “The man asked to speak to him a while. The victim observed a stack of paperwork the subject was holding and believed he was legitimate so he let him inside.”

Then, the victim became suspicious and told the man to get out of his house.  “The subject became angry and violent forcing his way into the house pushing the victim,” continues the news release.  “The subject continued to the rear of the house demanding money. The subject pushed the victim several more times when he tried to stop him from going into the rear of the house.  The victim gave him cash but the subject insisted he had more money in the house and ordered him to sit in a chair while he ransacked the room for money. Once the subject found money, he fled the residence.”

The victim complained of pain in his ribs and back but did not seek hospitalization.

“The man is described as a dark complexion African-American man with a muscular build in his 50’s, wearing a cap, plaid shirt and khaki pants,” reads the statement.

The Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans says that group’s workers never show up at homes unannounced, and they don’t ask for cash.

If you receive an unexpected visitor, asking for money or trying to get into your home while claiming to be from Catholic Charities, do not let him in — call 911 immediately.
