Tabitha Carper says group members brainwashed her child
Within three months, Tabitha Carper’s son went from being an outgoing teen who excelled in the classroom to a 16-year-old who’s solely focused on the world coming to an end.
He began to fail in school. The teen challenged his religious beliefs, disassociated himself from family and friends and talked of emancipating himself from his parents.
“My baby’s personality totally changed,” Carper said. “He doesn’t eat the same. His laughter is gone, and he has no desire to interact with us.
“He even says he’s not blessed. All he wants to do is go to (Africa) to fight this so-called holy war.”
Carper’s son began communicating over the Internet with a group of men from The Gathering of Christ Church, a religious organization based in Atlanta, and became obsessed with their teachings. Now, the Bossier City woman is fighting to protect her child from the organization she believes is targeting young black men and women.
“I’m like, ‘Lord, they have a hold on my child,'” Carper said. “If they can brainwash him in three months, what else can they do?”
